Delicious Healthy Recipes
Two simple dietary changes you can make to impact your eyes include adding fish servings and vegetables as recommended based on antioxidant therapies.
Eye health can be maintained by keeping a steady diet of Omega 3 fatty acids along with antioxidant-rich vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, beta carotene and lutein. These nutrients are key to protecting your eyes from UV damage, developing cataracts or macular degeneration.
Omega 3 fatty acids can be added to your diet by adding 1 serving of fish to your diet per day. Salmon, tuna, mackerel, anchovy, trout, halibut, scallops and snapper are all good sources of Omega 3s.
We recommend getting 8 servings of colorful fresh fruits and vegetables per day. Fresh fruits and vegetables like carrots, mango, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, oranges and strawberries are great sources of eye-health nutrients. Specifically, spinach, kale and other dark green leafy vegetables provide the lutein that your eyes need.
Keeping your eyes healthy can be delicious, too! Try the following simple recipes from the American Optometry Association's registered dietitian, Elizabeth Somer:

Back to School: Student Eye Exams
School's back in session for the year! And with a new year of academics ahead, every student deserves to have perfect vision.
Millions of children go back to school with undiagnosed vision problems that impair their ability to learn. The American Optometric Association recommends yearly exams for children, particularly at the start of a new school year. Give your child an eye exam to ensure readiness for the year ahead. Click here to schedule an appointment.

Natural Eye Supplements
We are seeing more and more success with natural supplements for patients with a history or family history of macular degeneration.
Lutein neutralizes free radicals in the eye to prevent retinal damage and may reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. This is a great preventative measure, particularly if you have a family history of macular degeneration. If you have already been diagnosed with macular degeneration, Lutein may help slow the progress of the disease and improve visual performance.
10mg of lutein per day is recommended to keep your eyes healthy and can be introduced into your diet through foods like spinach, kale, corn, eggs, and other dark green leafy vegetables. If it's tough to get enough lutein through diet alone, supplements containing lutein (such as Bauch & Lomb Preservision) make it easy to reach the daily recommended dose. Schedule an appointment to discuss your eye health needs with Dr. Lech today. |

April Showers, May Flowers: ALLERGY RELIEF |

We are all excited about the return of warm weather, sunshine and green grass this spring!
But unfortunately for those of us with allergies, this season comes with challenges in the form of itchy, red, irritated eyes. In fact, the Sacramento area is one of the worst regions in the nation for allergy sufferers due to our numerous allergy-inducing grasses and trees. Contact lens wearers are especially likely to have complications during springtime.
To combat allergies, minimize your contact with irritants--for most seasonal allergy sufferers, that means pollens and plants--by staying inside as much as possible.
Relief of your eye symptoms can be addressed with a variety of treatments, including prescription or over-the-counter medications.
For a customized plan for allergy relief this season, come by for a consultation. Scheduling is quick and easy, and an allergy visit may be covered by your medical insurance plan.
Take a look at what the American Optometric Association has to say about seasonal allergies here.

Retinal Screening: Do I need this test? |

Retinal screening is the latest way to ensure your eye health is maintained for the long haul. A 3-dimensional OCT scan (optical coherence tomography) is taken once per year. This scan provides the doctor with non-visible information (as in an MRI) not found during a yearly exam or in a traditional hi-resolution picture. Retinal screening is absolutely critical for patients with a history or family history of retinal disease, glaucoma, blindness, retinal detachment, macular degeneration hypertension, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or if you use high-risk medications, including steroids or chloroquine.
But what if your eyes are healthy? Think you really don't need it? Think it may not be worth your money or time?
Read on to see why even healthy patients should have retinal screening done yearly.

Do you have diabetes, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, or use high-risk medications like steroids?
Do you have a family history of glaucoma, macular degneration, or blindness?
We're offering a new service here at ClearVue for our patients who want to keep up with and keep track of their eye health. Retinal screening photos provide the doctor with a digital retinal image to detect and prevent problems. They are most effective when repeated from year to year to track any changes in the health and anatomy of your eyes.
We will provide you with a copy of the photos on disc so you can keep them with you in case you move and want to take your records with you. Schedule an appointment today, or contact us for more information. |
